Professor Emeritus - Wadsworth Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Dr. Udaya Halabe joined West Virginia University (WVU) as a faculty member in Civil and Environmental Engineering in August 1990 and retired from WVU in December 2022.
Dr. Halabe has over thirty years of research and field-testing experience in the area of nondestructive testing and evaluation of structural components. He has numerous publications to his credit in the area of nondestructive evaluation of timber, steel, concrete, and composite structural components. His expertise includes the use of several nondestructive testing techniques such as ultrasound, ground penetrating radar, infrared thermography, and vibration-based technologies.
Dr. Halabe is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Structural Engineering Institute and the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, and member of two honorary societies, Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Young Researcher Award (1992-93) from WVU's College of Engineering.
He also received the Civil and Environmental Engineering Departmental Excellence in Teaching Awards for the 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2014-2015, 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 academic years. In addition, he is a recipient of CEMR Outstanding Teacher Award in 2009-2010 and Statler College Outstanding Educator Award in 2022. He also received the Statler College Outstanding Advisor Award in 2016 and 2017, and CEE Department Outstanding Service Award in 2022.
In 2012, Dr. Halabe received Chi Epsilon National James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award and Cumberland District Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2016, Dr. Halabe received Outstanding Civil Engineering Educator of the Year Award from the West Virginia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Dr. Halabe is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of West Virginia.
