Lian-Shin Lin

Chairperson, Professor - Wadsworth Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Lin is a member of the Environmental/Hydrotechnical group in the Department. He has working experience in the academics, research institutes, and governmental agencies. His research interests fall in the following three areas:

Innovative water/wastewater technologies and strategies
Development of innovative wastewater treatment technologies and management approaches using green engineering/chemistry principles to improve food-energy-water nexus, use of iron as a green agent in wastewater treatment for energy efficiency and nutrient recovery, produced and blowdown water management (treatment and reuse), bioelectrochemical processes, estimation of methane emission/production potential from wastewater treatment plants, and aquaponics for nutrient removal.

Watershed assessment and climate change impacts
Assessment of the effects of anthropogenic stressors on aquatic ecosystems and mitigations, watershed attribute controlled stream responses to pollution, monitoring and assessment of highway construction impacts on stream health, long-term climate change in the Mid-Atlantic Region and impacts.

Contaminant fate and modeling
Chemical spill and fate in the environment, numerical simulations and modeling of chemical fate and persistence in aquatic systems.

Dr. Lin has been the faculty advisor for the Engineers Without Borders-WVU chapter since 2008. He is interested in developing innovative solutions for sustainable community development. He and his colleagues (Dr. Clement Solomon and Gary Christopher) created a new course Engineering Community Sustainability through Experiential Learning for senior and graduate students in engineering. Prior to joining the WVU, Dr. Lin worked for the Illinois State Water Survey, and California Regional Water Quality Control Board where he was involved in nutrient criteria and TMDL programs. He taught at the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo during 1997-1998.
