Dr. Garner works in the area of environmental engineering, studying the role of microorganisms in drinking water and wastewater systems. Specific areas of interest include: water quality in drinking water distribution systems; water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in rural settings; methods for tracking sources and downstream impacts of pathogens and fecal pollution in surface water; application of next generation sequencing methods for characterizing microbial communities.
