Professor - Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering
Derek Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering Department. He previously served as a Research Assistant Professor in the department, working in conjunction with the Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions. He has served as Principal Investigator or Co-PI on numerous projects funded by the Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, the Environmental Defense Fund, and others. He continues to lead research on the use of natural gas as a fuel for engines ranging from 1 hp to over 1000 hp. He also conducts research aimed at improving the understanding of methane emissions from across the entire natural gas supply chain. Johnson is also a registered professional engineer in West Virginia.
